Ingredients
Caramel Base
-
4 tbsp unsalted butter
-
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
Apple Filling
-
4 lbs Granny Smith apples, peeled and thickly sliced
-
1/2 cup brown sugar
-
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
-
2 tbsp apple cider or lemon juice
-
2 tsp ground cinnamon
-
1/2 tsp nutmeg
-
1/2 tsp ground ginger
-
1/4 tsp ground cloves
Assembly
-
2 pie crusts (store-bought or homemade)
-
1 egg + 1 tsp milk or cream (egg wash)
-
Coarse sugar, for topping
Cooking time:
1 hr 30 min
Instructions:
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Place a rimmed baking sheet on a lower rack to catch any caramel overflow.
-
Make the caramel layer:
In a 10” cast iron skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar and stir until smooth (about 2 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
-
Prepare the apple filling:
In a separate large skillet, combine all apple filling ingredients. Stir and cook over medium heat for 5–7 minutes, until apples are slightly tender but still hold their shape. Let cool for 20 minutes.
-
Assemble the pie: -
Lay one pie crust over the cooled caramel in the skillet, pressing gently to remove air pockets.
-
Spoon in the cooled apple filling and spread evenly.
-
Add the top crust — either whole or in a lattice pattern. Crimp edges to seal.
-
Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar.

-
-
Bake:
Bake for 60–65 minutes, until the crust is golden brown. Cover with foil if browning too quickly.
-
Cool:
Let the pie cool on a rack for at least 1 hour before slicing to allow the filling to set.
This pie is a showstopper — rich, spiced, and beautifully caramelized thanks to the heat retention of your Signature Series cast iron skillet. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or as is, and enjoy every bite of tradition and flavor.
